Black Ops II “Liberation” DLC fake

It seems to be that time again where the fake DLC leaks start coming out. This recent one for Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Liberation, appeared legit. With good art, unique design and names, and even a correct release date (if previous leaks are to be believed).

So what makes it blatantly obvious the the DLC is fake? Well, the Zombie on the right is from The Walking Dead. That’s a start.

So basically, this is fake. Don’t fall for it.

Call of Duty Top Selling Franchise of the Generation, Reveals Ubisoft

Ubisoft has just held its’ earnings call for the last quarter. As part of the presentation, the publisher put together a list of the best selling franchises of the current console generation to stack its’ own titles against other publishers.

Ubisoft’s list is based on physical unit sales tracked by NPD, GFK, Chart-Track, and Nielsen, as shown below:

Activision’s Call of Duty placed first with Halo and Battlefield coming in 7th and 11th respectively. Of course, compared to other shooters, Call of Duty is the only series to see yearly new releases.

Black Ops 2 claimed the top spot for last year with its’ predecessor, Modern Warfare 3, coming in seventh. Meanwhile, Halo 4 finished at number 4, Borderlands 2 took the 8th spot, and 2011′s Battlefield 3 rounded out the top 10.

Lastly, Activision and EA traded places in the last two years as the leader in terms of the market share.

Looking ahead, Ubisoft hopes that it will  “lead to record sales for the industry,” and the publisher is utilizing “new IPs to capitalize on PS4′s launch,” starting with Watch Dogs.

Call of Duty Blamed as Boy Admits Killing Mom with Birthday-Gift Rifle

It’s been a cheerful day for video game crime news, hasn’t it? First was the teenage father who sawed a former friend’s neck down to the trachea over some Xbox Live name-calling. Now an Iowa boy says he killed and attempted to rape his mother after she took away Call of Duty.

That’s according to the 911 call 14-year-old Noah Crooks of Osage, Iowa placed on March 24, 2012, the night he shot his mother 20 times. It was played in court this week as his trial began. His mother, Gretchen Crooks, had confiscated his video game about three hours before she was shot to death, an act believed to spark the fit of rage that led to her killing. It was the first homicide reported in that town since 1898.

“I’m not joking at all. She’s dead. I’m scared. I killed my mom with my .22. I don’t know why I did it,” he told the 911 dispatcher. “I tried to rape her. I tried to rape her but I couldn’t do it.” He spoke of playing Call of Duty and said his mother took it away because he got bad grades. “Something just came over me,” he said.

Crooks shot her with the .22 rifle he was given as an 11-year-old. Considering a 5-year-old in Kentucky just shot his 2-year-old sister to death with a candy-colored, small-size .22 rifle made especially for children, one would think this type of product or gift-giving practice should come in for a public ass-kicking, but I doubt it will.

The defense opened its case on Friday with testimony from Noah Crooks’ friends, one of whom played Call of Duty with him online. The testimony is meant to establish some type of rapid change in Crooks’ behavior. Despite constant references to an attention deficit disorder and the rambling 911 call in which he appears divorced from reality, he did say, “I feel crazy and I know I’m not.”

Sledgehammer Games Not On Board With Call of Duty: Ghosts, “Heads Down” in “Next Project”

It appears that Sledgehammer games, who co-developed 2011′s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 with developers Infinity Ward, will not return to assist with the recently announced Call of Duty: Ghosts. Instead, they are “heads down” in their “next project.”

As many may already know, Call of Duty’s yearly development cycle sees an alteration between two primary studios: Infinity Ward (COD 1, COD 2, COD4, MW2, MW3) and Treyarch (COD 3, WaW, BO1, BO2). In 2011, Sledgehammer Games was thrown into the mix, assisting Infinity Ward with the development of Modern Warfare 3 after a number of employees left to form Respawn Entertainment, who are said to be working on an upcoming project, code named “Titan,” under publisher Electronic Arts.

According to a recent tweet by Sledgehammer Games congratulating Infinity Ward on the announcement of COD: Ghosts, it appears that they will not be returning to development on this year’s Call of Duty title. They have something else planned.

Screen Shot 2013-05-01 at 1.08.25 PM

Last we heard of the studio, they were reported to be searching for a Senior Environment Artist to work on a Call of Duty title for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Earlier, co-founder Glen Schofield hinted at the possibility of moving on to an entirely new IP, saying, “we’d like to do both [create another CoD] or either. Truthfully, how could you go wrong with making either another COD game or a new IP?” After the release of Modern Warfare 3, Schofield stated, “we will all need some time to recharge the batteries and come back refreshed and ready to give 110%… I know Activision wants us to work on what we’re passionate about, that’s why they asked us to work on MW3, not forced us.”

UPDATE: You may also recall Activision stating their intent to “engage [their core audience] beyond their TV or PC and then give them new experiences around Call of Duty that are unique for [mobile devices].” It’s possible that Sledgehammer Games would be spear-heading the shift towards more “grandiose, immerse experiences” on mobile.

Either way, it looks as though we can look forward do something new from developers Sledgehammer Games, hopefully soon. This also suggests that Infinity Ward may be the sole development house working on Call of Duty: Ghosts, unless, as earlier rumores suggested, they’ve partnered up with Neversoft, who were also reported to be working on a Call of Duty project.

What do you guys think Sledgehammer Games could be working on?
